Good to see a balanced appraisal of the capabilities the F16 will bring rather than the "It's the best/crap" offerings from lesser contributors.

As I understand it the hydrogen bomb has two parts; a fission trigger and a fusion main. For the lower yield only the trigger is initiated. I doubt that the bomb is any dirtier as it produces the fission products either way, but less neutrons without the fusion reaction.

That Hornet raid with 60-72 NAIM-174s would cost $210-252m for the missiles alone!
13
Isn't that what he said "Supersonic combustion ram jet, or SCRAMJET"?
8
About as believable as the accents those "intercepted American troops" had.
8
@michaelnewell9662 Have to assume the west is training the maintainers and not just the pilots?
7
I hope those batteries are "squaddie proof" I can just imagine damaging one and going up in flames while wearing it!
7
US is currently testing the Minuteman III replacement.
6
If they follow a ballistic trajectory then they are ballistic missiles. They don't have to travel high or have a long range to qualify.
5
Does anyone remember the "poor civilian" whose leg was blown off by Ukrainian shelling - who they accidentally showed was fitted for a prosthetic limb!
4
@vic5015 They are what? I have no doubt that the F16 is the best aircraft to give Ukraine under the circumstances, my point was that it was good to see a balanced review of what they offer.
3
@hugo-di6xm They have shown themselves to be adaptable. They might not be able to extract everything from the aircraft that a fully trained NATO pilot might, but I have no doubt that they will be able to fight with them. Just integrating the western weapons and aircraft systems will be a major step up from what they have now.
3
@SaintDonaldoMatamoros They will never have AWACS regardless of what they are flying, so that point is irrelevant. As for training, they are being trained.
3
Exactly the point I was going to make.
3
@vic5015 Sorry, I missed a level in the thread 🙄

@k53847 Metal fires are made worse by water.
2
@sarkaranish More fuel than a manned aircraft of similar size yes. However, they still have to match the NGAD's cruise and stealth performance.
2
@sarkaranish In the context of naval 6th gen I agree completely. My concern is the long range USAF missions mentioned in the article.

If there isn't a modern Red Cell, there should be.

After extensive testing of the F16 wing, GD reinvented the J35 Draken. (Tongue in cheek comment, don't get triggered)
1
Shooting down satellites is a really dumb thing to do.
1
@landonluebke7627 True about the historical context. If you want to do it now though, the safest option is enforced de-orbit.
1
@AllDay3090 Still not easy to shoot down, you have to have your interceptor in the right place.
1
@AllDay3090 How to display lack of knowledge in one sentence.
1
So, how many can a B2/B21 carry?
1
Skynet already exists, although it is a military communications network not a combat system.
1
Solar is fine for power generation close in, but it would be a game changer for exploration of the outer solar system. Not just for power generation either, it would allow a probe to travel out with sufficient energy remaining to slow down again to enter an orbit.
1
The way you are going you will lose your radars in Greenland and the UK.
1
Just imagine the effect of a bullet or a piece of shrapnel piercing one of those batteries!
1
Delaying a program always results in a worse system and increased costs.
1
The ability to leverage the full capabilities of HARM might be the most important role of the F16. If they can "turn off" Russian AD (even locally) then they will allow Ukraine to access the full benefits of combined arms operations.
1
@Sprout-1969 Yeah, a 100ib fragmentation warhead would be pretty effective against a ships radar, E/O and comms systems.
1
@bradcraig5111 Are you blind? Have you not seen the industrial capacity China has?
1
@bradcraig5111 Given how much tech they have stolen over the years, are you sure it is junk?
1
@michaelold6695 Hence why DARPA are interested in Reaction Engines.
1
@trolleriffic Skylon is not an engine it's a vehicle, their engine is called Sabre. The SSTO Skylon might have military applications but the really interesting part is the engine pre-cooler. Fit that pre-cooler to a fully air breathing Sabre (or a derivative of) and you have the makings of a truly useful hypersonic aircraft.
1
How long before we see an aircraft fielding a metamaterial skin?
1
@hugo-di6xm I don't see why they wouldn't with suitable training. They are able to maintain Mig 29s and Su27s.
1
Wasn't one of the issues with the V22 down to errors during the transition between vertical and horizontal flight? I'm not sure if this is true or anecdotal, but V22's were said to be banned from transitioning over certain areas of Bastion.
1
@n3v3rforgott3n9 Care to amplify?
1
Years. Ukraine has no reprocessing capability.
1
@FieryWACO Yes, no one is giving them one.
1
@FieryWACO Wtf are you smoking?
1
@FieryWACO More like crack.
1
@sarkaranish They are not that small, they still require the capability for internal weapons carriage.
1
@sarkaranish We will see. Happy to be proven wrong.
1
@mauricio-leyenda Venus could be surveyed using a PTFE coated airship.
1
Never understood why the UK ditched its ALARM loitering missile.
1
@4dbullshitpatroll6 Of course it is 🤣🤣
1
Some of us have to do it the other way.
