Absolute rubbish. Hinkley Point C will be operational by the end of the decade (3.2GW). Sizewell C is set for 2034 (using the higher twelve year build estimate).

@thomasreilly6362 No, sorry. You said "new nuclear power station opens" the two I mentioned are not yet open. They will, in themselves, account for around 14% of current UK demand. There are no planned SMRs at present, but it is highly unlikely that it would take 20 years or more to bring the first into service.

@thomasreilly6362 Sizewell C is not under construction, it has only just been approved. As for the rest, the main issue is funding, which is why nuclear should be nationalised and built by the government. Failing that, large capital intensive projects like nuclear, tidal, hydro etc should be given access to government backed, long-term, low interest rate loans.

@thomasreilly6362 China recently built one in three years! Sizewell B took seven (and people complained it was too long), so it's not unreasonable to think that we could have been knocking them out in five if we had continued building them. We could have been fossil fuel free (for electricity generation) by now :(
