Same thing as will happen if the grid is powered by renewables.

@mycamguy Neither would nuclear. Whatever "event" hit the earth now we would have ample warning to shut down vulnerable equipment.

@buildmotosykletist1987 No. I have not followed the thorium developments as, like you, I feel uranium is the more likely fuel for use in the short term.
2
@mycamguy No, I was responding to your point about Carrington events. Once a reactor has been shut down it only requires power for cooling and that can be provided by diesel generators.

Uranium and thorium too. Since Australia would be starting from scratch and have to install legislation prior to any decisions being taken you could afford to wait and watch how the industry develops. SMRs, molten salt, thermal/fast neutron, liquid metal, there are a lot of alternative designs under development.

@buildmotosykletist1987 I never said there were.

@buildmotosykletist1987 China is about to test one, but I agree, it will be a while before they are likely to become commercially available. That does not mean that they will never become viable though and Australia's reserves of thorium are not going anywhere.

@mycamguy You think a CME is going to flood a reactor?
1
@bk-yg9yw Probably for a reason.

@mycamguy Sorry, confused you with the OP. It was 3:00AM when I was posing.

@Interglacial_optimist Why would they have no diesel?
1
@Interglacial_optimist There is plenty of diesel around. If you are talking about a post zero world then yes, an alternative off grid power source would be required. Something new and radical, like a battery pack?
