As I write this on a Friday afternoon, the UK is producing just 0.5GW of electricity from wind, the same as from coal! For comparison, the average figure is 6.5GW and last years peak was 12.38GW. That is the type of swing that has to be met from fossil fuel or storage when relying on wind power.

@Democratic Socialists of Australia Yes, which it can achieve for only twelve of the twenty four hours each day. Last year solar averaged 1.3GW. Combined solar and wind can theoretically produce at least 18GW but last year averaged only 8GW. Research: Reality.

@Democratic Socialists of Australia It's currently 18:30 here in the UK and still light. Solar, wind and Hydro are currently generating 2.52GW of electricity, or 8.5%5 of demand. Tell me again how cheap they are when we are currently relying on fossil fuel for 57% of our needs?

@Democratic Socialists of Australia No amount of increase will alter the fact that to make intermittent renewables work the UK must install both generation over capacity and a lot of storage. This, along with increased power transfer installation/maintenance, eats into the claims of low cost.

@johngeier8692 Both can and do make a decent contribution. If we had had just maintained out nuclear capacity we could be close to fossil-free at current electrical demand. I just wish the renewables lobby would be honest when they talk about costs. They always quote "cost per KWh" but never include the costs associated with the need to install over capacity and storage.
