@rattusfinkus No they don't. Cost while they are producing might be cheap, but they conveniently ignore costs associated with backup, increased distribution infrastructure and grid intermittency issues.

@rattusfinkus Reality. Renewables without hydro or geothermal rely on either fossil or nuclear backup. Gas and/or coal plant must be maintained even if not running (thus generating no financial return) RE advocates always call for grid improvements, though they never include the cost in their own figures. A nuclear reactor has high up front costs, but has a far higher operational capacity and can be sited to take advantage of existing grid infrastructure.

@rattusfinkus Except those studies do not look at whole life costs, where nuclear proves to be cheaper. 100% RE only works well if you have access to plentiful hydro or geo.
