It is cheap if you just look at cost per KWh generated. It is not cheap if you include the necessary storage and over capacity needed to ensure reliability.

@TheRealBobSmith. The cost per KWh while generating is cheap, relative to most other methods. The issue (usually ignored) is that when they are not generating some other means of providing power has to be found, which leads to the cost increase. You cannot simply replace 10GW of coal with 10GW of renewables (Wind / Solar) because they are intermittent providers. It requires 20GW solar and 120GWh of storage for example (based on an over simplified average 12hr light/dark period, ignoring energy losses) Alternately, you have to keep the 10GW of reserve coal capacity and run it for 50% of the time. The more intermittent renewables installed, the greater the need for excess capacity and storage in the system.
