  2. What utter drivel. Turn off its radar and the F35 has electro-optical sensors and data coms that make it an excellent recce aircraft. Whoever said the F35 was an air superiority fighter? That was never its role.The yanks have the F22 for that (though not enough) and we have Typhoon.

  6.  @johnstark4723  Indeed it can and in the naval context will have to, but air superiority fighter is not its strongest suit. Can it hold its own in air to air combat, yes, but a mixed F22/F35 force would be preferred.

  7.  Hagen van Tronje  It depends on the type of recce required. It is not a strategic asset (eg U2) to be sure, but it makes an excellent tactical asset.

  8.  Hagen van Tronje  Ultimately yes, if we had the right drones. What we have are slow moving and easy targets for SAMs. The recce aircraft you can see coming is the one you can most easily hide from.
