  10.  @andreassumerauer5028  No worries, apologies if I came across as similarly harsh. I was too young to vote in the 1975 referendum (to remain in the EEC) but a 14 year old me would have voted to remain. I do not however support the EU because I do not like the way it has evolved from a trading block into a supra-state. I much prefer smaller communities working towards common goals in their own way. I do regret that the split became so acrimonious; we share many similar goals, if not the path to achieve them.

It did not become the European Union until 1993, an act which required the unanimous approval of all member states. John Major, fearing the public would not back such a union, refused to hold a public referendum in the UK.
