  1.  @rapman5363  Oh dear, someone should read a book. In January 1942 British intelligence warned the US that two groups of German U-boats had been dispatched to attack shipping off the east coast. The US failed to act on the warning. US merchant shipping was not arranged into convoys but continued to sail alone and largely unguarded. US cities had no blackouts and remained brightly lit; allowing German U-boats to sit offshore and spot shipping highlighted against the bright background. The result was three months of carnage in which over one hundred ships were lost. Ms Morgan is correct, most Americans were unaware of the losses as they were (understandably) covered up by the US government.

  6. There was a fire department, but they were swamped. In London there were 2500 firemen at the start of the war, though the auxiliary fire service aimed to raise a further 28,000. Owing to the war many were selected from those either too young or old to fight. Over 70,000 women joined the national fire service, employed as drivers and fire watchers rather than fire fighters. They were still out on the streets during bombing raids however. The blitz of 1940 saw 57 nights of continuous air raids, with almost 10,000 fires attended in the first 22 nights alone. 327 London firefighters lost their lives during the war. The fire brigade tackled large fires, such as factories and warehouses but for single incendiaries in urban areas it was up to local fire wardens and even the public to help out.
