  1. Cannot agree, especially with respect to defence. What makes you think a "private army" would act in the best interests of the public and not the company/cooperative/whatever who raised them? How would a system of small competing private armies, even assuming that they were acting in support of the population, fare against a state with a single army using common methods and equipment? Their logistics would be crap and they would be slaughtered is how.
