They should determine exactly what they need the fighter to do, then choose the aircraft that best suits their requirement.

Italy and the UK operate the F35B, S Korea and Singapore have selected them. Few countries have a need for the C variant as they are intended for carrier operations.

@alexandrebouchet9283 Yes, Russian and Chinese trolls are very active on the internet.

The clue might be in the first "A"? They are not just a space organisation.

@Lasenggo My post was tongue in cheek.

@alamoemperor3845 Though you have trained to carry US bombs since the introduction of the Starfighter in 1960 and had a (US owned) nuclear missile capability in 1959.

Good review and thanks for voicing it yourself.

No, it really was not. It would have compromised its stealth too much.

@davem2369 The one credible argument in favour of the decision to drop CATOBAR from the QE's is that the ships have no steam generation system installed. The propulsion system uses electric motors and there were doubts on the reliability of EMALS (which the Ford has found to its cost). I still wish that they had gone with the system though.

Weak stealth capability compared with the F35 and only cheaper on paper. Don't forget, it was too heavy to take off vertically in clean configuration as produced.

@pmullins8821 Would the F32 have been any different? It couldn't even take off vertically without removing bits of the airframe.

@dickmelsonlupot7697 The trouble is... that technology doesn't exist. Yet.
1
@dickmelsonlupot7697 The same can be said for fusion power. That has taken over fifty years and is still not available. Designers counter the technology that exists now, not what might exist in the future.
1
@dickmelsonlupot7697 Fusion research has been well funded, it's just bloody hard to achieve. Current stealth technology will be degraded and likey rendered ineffective over time, but that time is not now. Newer multi-spectral stealth technologies will be developed in response, that is what happens in all defence fields.

@davem2369 The French could use it as their carriers use the CATOBAR system, but would the French ever buy a non-French aircraft?
