  2.  @Theworldaccordingtomickey  US runs a negative balance of payments because of the status of being the reserve currency. There needs to be enough dollars in circulation to the world to flow back to the US as investment and debt instruments. You can't have balanced trade and be the reserve currency at the same time. There's a name for this, it's called the Triffin dilemma.
