The US has been de-industrialized to such an extent the amount of investment needed for re-industrialization is cost prohibitive and having 36 trillion of debt makes massive amounts of government intervention unrealistic. The US completely isolating themselves with trade barriers would result in an Soviet style economy that is closed off to the rest of the world. We only need to look at Ricardo's Comparative Advantage or the Heckscher-Ohlin model to understand how the US should participate in international trade.

@phillcantrell9060 A Soviet style economy refers to the attempt at self sufficiency in all aspects of the production cycle, which devoted vast resources that would have been better served elsewhere. In the end this proved fatal for the Soviet Union. Now Russia enjoys extensive trade with China and India. Of course at the expense of Europe and the US due to sanctions, but that's a self inflicted wound on Europe's part and an opportunity for the US to exploit their vassals. No country can be autarkic and the notion one could be is completely devoid of reality.
