It's dumb to use a combustion engine as a generator because it is less efficient than delivering power straight to the wheels which means you now need a more powerful/expensive electric motor and battery setup to achieve the same effect. If it was up to me I would replace the gearbox with a electric motor, having the combustion engine at a constant "5th" gear and using the electric motor for acceleration, reverse and lower speeds (city driving, mostly). There are probably hybrids that do that already, but I would Mike to see this technology being used to make cars smaller and lighter, not the opposite.
