  1. If I had to guess I would say it must be the tendency the wheel has to twist itself when moving forward. The front section of the wheel has slightly more momentum than when it meets the ground, where it has to overcome friction, and in order to preserve that it naturally goes for the patch with less resistance, a.k.a. a straight line. More speed, friction, or even flexibility of the wheel material, more stable it should become.
