I think what Toyota is trying to say is that the sheer amount of lithium and rare materials required to make batteries for EVs in the numbers we want is simply unsustainable regardless of infrastructure. We will need something else to power cars. For the time being, hybrids are the best thing, we can use small batteries for urban commute and combustion engines for road travels and range extension. At that point all we need is a convenient recharging method at our garages. A potential candidate to power the future is hydrogen, despite being an mediocre fuel source at best, it can be produced cleanly. Hydrogen combustion engines aren't great due to nox emissions but fuel cells only produce water.
