@davis.fourohfour good for hatchs too however the beauty of it shows on ebikes. It would give something like the surron x (a 120ish pound ebike) enough range for most americans to daily commute. 15kg of batteries per unit, unlike the half a ton of a tesla. Affordable EVs with a smaller carbon footprint than walking, in other words. Assuming these batteries wouldn't cost much more than 2k, I mean.

Doug, what we should be building is hybrid tiltrotors. We have axial flux motors now that are very light and compact, able to deliver high torque, perfect to provide a boost during take off and climb, where the engine is the least efficient, and we only need a smaller battery to do so that should be charged in forward flight. Even in aircraft like these, one or two small gas turbines working as generators could be placed anywhere in the fuselage to power any configuration of propellers, although not ideal because of the extra weight. Still, one of these with a "booster" battery could eventually be cheaper to operate than conventional fixed wing turboprops, despite being way more flexible. Furthermore, a single frame could support a variety of configurations, smaller engines can give you more range or fuel economy while bigger ones increase your payload capacity, and you can even remove that weight if all you do is short sporadic flights. That's something we are plenty capable to do today, not 30 years from now.

@dertythegrower the problem is that it is a eVTOL and those always have nearly useless flight time. It’s all about these wonder solid state batteries that never come to market and that would be better used in virtually any other application. Know what I want? A hybrid tiltrotor. Because the electric motor can make up for the engine inefficiency during take off and climb and recoup that energy in forward flight. May not look like much, but a significant amount of fuel is spend just for that and it adds up fast in short flights. You tell me what is more exciting, an individual transport that can fly for 10 minutes for every hour of charge... or a interstate bus service that demands little infrastructure and gets you there 10 times as fast. If a "high capacity" passenger quad tiltrotor sounds fiction to you, it won’t be for long. Plus that's a very solid first step in eletric aviation even before this wonder battery comes out. I don't want to dismiss this gentleman's work, it is important and will pave the way for more inovations... but to me it is just a fancy overcomplicated cab. One of many at that.

The problem with hydrogen as a fuel source is density. Space is more an of a issue for an car than for an airplane.

Pitiful flight times, very high upfront cost, low maintenance, relatively low running costs (only reason why it is being considered).

Do they realize that this battery pack can give Surrons enough range to comfortably replace most daily commuters in America? We could realistically start pursuing carbon neutral cities at this point.

Wings = extra lift, extra lift generally equals to better fuel efficiency. In other words... a tiltrotor/wing will be twice as much efficient as a traditional helicopter.

The real deal is to put it in a tiltrotor. One of those axial flux motors on each rotor and you got yourself a nice take off boost when the engine is the least efficient that will recharge itself in forward flight, no charging time required.
