They didn't. It's basically economies of scale, lithium, nickel and cobalt are finite resources, hydrogen is not, for practical purposes. Toyota sells about 10 times as many cars as Tesla, they simply wouldn't have the resources to feed the market with electric cars at competitive prices. Hydrogen is a pain in the ass to deal with, however Japan may have a steady supply soon enough, courtesy of the waste byproduct of nuclear energy production. Think of a country like mine, where 1.0 liter 4 cylinder engines are the norm. No one will buy a Tesla here because no one has the money to do so. And lithium isn't getting any cheaper. That's why I keep saying Sodium batteries are the big event in battery technology... IF they become a thing.
