"If you disagree with me, you're a moron" spoken like a true fundamentalist or a satirist I pray

What bothers me more than Harris' sweeping generalized statement which threw all muslims in the same camp and ultimately says "You are wrong to your very core" is the ardent fundamentalist defense of that statement and Harris from zealot fanboys coupled with their appalling ignorance of these areas and the peoples living there. Imagine saying the French and the German are almost exactly alike. This is essentially what many of them are doing as they show little understanding of the socio-political ethnic diversity of the Islamic world. This is why Reza had good cause to take CNN to task over broadly painting female genitalia mutilation as specifically a Muslim issue. Two thoughts should have clued them in - Saudi Arabia where Islam started and which is oppressive enough in other ways would be a-washed in such practice if it came out of Islam. And you see this same kind of knowledge in a number of Harris defenders. Their knowledge of Islam comes primarily thru other people's words such as Harris and translations of the Koran without context. How many have spent time in an Islamic country or spoken to people from there? These critics read the Koran in the US and become insta-experts on the whole of Islam and muslims in general. And ultimately this is what gets my proverbial goat, this simplification and dumbing down of debate to trite sound bites of superficial observations which are not productive to healthy discourse.

"However right now arguably more of the trouble in the world is being caused by ideas found in Islam." No it's not. This is fabricated trouble because the media is focusing on ISIS and the like which we have built into some kind of super villain group like Cobra from GI JOE. The US and the western world has the military might, technology, and science to completely dominated the Islamic world and so it has for quite some time. The idea that a troop of islamic crazies who number in the several tens of thousands but have no planes or missiles or an actually real trained military force are somehow a global threat. They may do beheadings, they may do acts of terrorism but they are ultimately pinpricks on the skin of the western global capitalistic behemoth.

***** oh, please! Are they dropping drones on people? We've killed more people directly and indirectly in those regions than all those groups combined. And ISIS threatening to screw up the area? Hello! We already did that! They are an annoyance to be sure but if not for continual blind western meddling and exploitation it would be less than it is. Focusing on these groups is just another way for us to ignore our continual part in all this.

a number of atheists (not all mind you) have a fundamentalist mentality and like a fundamentalist cannot see that in themselves because from their viewpoint they are absolutely right and anyone who disagrees with them is absolutely wrong

Jason-Garth Hue "Sam Harris is only focusing more on Islam because of its immediate and present threat. " And this is why he is a disingenuous fraud. I find it hilarious that we find the religion of countries that we occupy many of so threatening to our existence as we help ourselves to their oil. ISIS is a mosquito and one we helped to create thru our blundering. Putting the blame on Islam is just another dodge from having to realize the blunders we have made in our parasitic capitalistic pursuits

Jason-Garth Hue and what will be gained from outsiders criticizing people to their core belief saying they are wrong and in effect evil? Do you think anyone over there even moderates will jump on board with this? Look, for people who claim to be secularists, basic human concepts and common sense seem to escape you lot. No one likes it when someone else tells them they are wrong even if they are wrong. It is especially compounded when the ones who are telling the others they are wrong are also currently occupying many of their countries and bombing them while attacking their fundamental beliefs both from the right and the left while exposing ignorance. Even those who are persecuted like women, homosexuals, even atheists still see themselves as part of that culture and some even of that religion. What they want is reform not destruction physically or ideologically.
1
SatanicBunny "we shouldn't shy away from pointing such things out in any religion or ideology." but understand it will have little to no effect on those areas because it will be as it has been as outsider criticizing from a point of ignorance and cultural imperialism and will be used as it has been to get more recruits to the extremist groups.
1
Jason-Garth Hue but when you make blanket comments like "Islam is the motherlode of bad ideas" you immediately isolate those in the communities who have stood up many of whom do not agree with that statement.
1
SatanicBunny Your silence will have the same effect as your comments except it will be less used to fuel islamaphobia and the reaction against it. Criticize the actions and the individuals and support those within who are working for reform. Generalized criticism coupled with ignorance of the region is not going to help people like Malala Yousafzai.
1
SatanicBunny calling extremists evil such as "ISIS is evil" is one thing which the vast majority of muslims will agree and support but "Islam is the mother lode of bad ideas" - can you not possibly see why this statement is counter-productive to the first?

SuperThe86 and you know this from your vast knowledge and experience with people from islamic countries?
