  1. the conservative mentality of fear of the other goes way back and is in part rooted in the old fear of slave uprisings in pre-Civil War South. It was that fear and the anger of meddling northern states that wanted to curtail their expansion into the West as well as seek to end it entirely led them to form an identity of a collective group united in common purpose against a common enemy. This is why conservatives are always creating enemies and boogeymen in order to unite themselves more so than any real unifying principles or ideals.
