  1. Even in the Age of Muskets overthrowing a government was hard to do and the US didn't even do that as the British government was very much intact at the end of our Revolution. Despite the myth that farmers with guns beat the great British Empire, we lost more battles than we won. It was military training, long-term planning, and assistance from France and Spain that made continuing the war too costly for the British who had interests all over the globe at the time. Distance was also a factor. Shortly after the Revolution there was Shay's Rebellion and the Whiskey Rebellion both of which were put down. No, it's all gun nut fantasy whenever Democrats have a little power. The real danger is rightwingers taking over at local and federal levels and the base using their guns against liberals much like the brownshirts of the 20s&30s in Germany.

  2. the conservative mentality of fear of the other goes way back and is in part rooted in the old fear of slave uprisings in pre-Civil War South. It was that fear and the anger of meddling northern states that wanted to curtail their expansion into the West as well as seek to end it entirely led them to form an identity of a collective group united in common purpose against a common enemy. This is why conservatives are always creating enemies and boogeymen in order to unite themselves more so than any real unifying principles or ideals.
