Elliot Vickers other modern countries don't live with this paranoid unfounded fear that they need mountains of guns to defend themselves against enemies foreign and domestic (while kids are shooting each other and adults). Even Switzerland which has a long tradition of maintaining a standpoint in this regard where much of their population keeps firearms and are ready to deploy at a moment's notice. This is just empty gun nut rhetoric combined with a Rambo-esque fantasy.

***** there wasn't this fanatical obsession with guns until more recently. The NRA was formed for gun safety after all the bad gun handling of Northern troops in the Civil War and they supported the machine gun ban in the 1930s. Many old western towns enforced strict gun control requiring people to check their guns when they enter town or when they entered an establishment. No one worried about the government snatching up guns. That didn't really start until the late 70s kicking into high from the 80s onward.

Elliot Vickers no military tactics is what made success in the revolution possible. Before that the militia kept getting beat time and time again to the point where the British didn't respect us. Having a gun doesn't mean you can fight effectively. Having a gun and know how to use it properly does.

The US can't really follow Japan's example as they have never had a proliferation of firearms (nor a shilling NRA pushing gun-grabbing fear conspiracies). Switzerland would be a better example to try to model ourselves on due to the amount of firearms they have and military training for country defense since so many gun enthusiast in the US fancy themselves freedom fighting militia. Require training and proof of purchase of guns and yes a (dreaded) registry so people can't give or sell guns to anyone they feel like. The problem with this of course is the sale of guns bought out of fear would go down in a better gun-regulated society which would cut into profits so this won't happen anytime soon so long as greed and gullible paranoia rule in the US.

Yes but a third of all deaths by natural causes in Japan were actually from Ninja. The only thing that can stop a bad ninja with a shuriken is a good ninja with a shuriken.
