I still don't see what's wrong in looking more in depth at particular situations rather than just going "oh, it's religion/Islam which is the problem" and calling it a day. Regardless of his other works, Reza should be applauded for taking those CNN hosts to task for their ignorance.

And yet more bigots, islamicphobes, and warmongers have jumped on Harris's side than reza and affleck's

***** Given that FGM predates Islam by more than millennia and from another continent, I think it safe to conclude that FGM and Islam are not intricately linked. How is Aslan's rhetoric detrimental to the discussion? He was shooting down two CNN hosts who were throwing everything and the kitchen sink without any connection to each other because they have little knowledge of those regions. And this is the crux of the matter - whether right or left we suffer from too much general ignorance but that doesn't stop us from barging in throwing generalizations and blames every which way.

***** You are making less sense as you warble on. Do you not get it? FGM is no more connected to Islam than it is to Christianity or any outside culture that has been adopted. Even if Buddhism had spread there they would continue or even secularism as they would use science to justify their practice. "Should I take Aslan's absence in your previous post as an implicit agreement that he is a detrimental to the discussion?" Seriously, WTF are you babbling about?

***** no my comment was about why is it bad to look further into situations and that Aslan was right in taking two CNN hosts to task for being ignorant. You busted in screaming FGM, Islam, and Aslan are all connected and won't let it go despite me telling you the fact that FGM predates Islam and started on another continent. You're like some obsessed asperger sufferer who cannot let something go and repeat the same thing over and over again.

***** whatever, dude. I find it ironic that you keep saying Aslan is detrimental to the FGM issue when it was only a talking point made to show how Maher and later the CNN hosts were ignorant of both Islam and that part of the world. In fact it is you who are detrimental to the FGM problem with your obsessive mountain out of a molehill over one talking point. Had Alsan made numerous attempts to stop people from discussing FGM you might be on something (other than your medication) but that is not the case here. You refuse to look beyond the fact that FGM predates Islam and originated on another continent and is not heavily practiced in the areas where Islam first began and had its centers of power and influence from Mecca to Damascus to Baghdad to Istanbul. It originated in Pre-Islamic/Pre-Christian central africa. The Greeks wrote about the practice in Ancient Egypt. The influx of those religions and modern influences have had little affect on stopping the practice despite christian and islamic leaders preaching against it. Attacking Islam and Aslan(?) over FGM is missing the target by a mile. I think you care less about FGM and care more about using it to sling mud at Aslan and Islam. This is why you not Aslan are ultimately detrimental to the discussion. You want to focus on the superficial and play your cute pseudo-intellectual word games while refusing to acknowledge that FGM is a deeply rooted issue not to be simply solved by blaming a religion that came long after it. I'm sorry but you offer nothing and are as clueless and useless as those CNN hosts - plus I think you have some issues you need to work out with a professional.

Red Lion 1) I'm not an apologist and 2) how in the world am I dangerous for telling people to look beyond simple easy conclusions? Stop surface dwelling! That's been the whole problem here - too many self-righteous ignorant intolerant yahoos yelling about something they don't understand because they're feelings were hurt when their chosen icon was attacked. For the record I've never read Alsan or Harris but am arguing solely from the points they have made on Maher, CNN, and TYT and more importantly in reaction to the more dangerous Harris fanboy reaction all this has brought about. I say dangerous because it shows intolerance to contrary opinions, self-righteousness, a willful ignorance not to look at context, and giving rationalizations to those who want to continue to war and exploit those regions we are currently warring and exploiting. In short I see little difference in their overall actions than I do in Fox News, Beck, and O'Reilly who have all supported Maher and Harris in the wake of all this.

***** fgm did not start with Islam nor in Saudi arabia

***** If FGM existed long before Islam and came from another continent then where islam originated its connection is tenuous at best. What is with your obsession with FGM, Islam, and Aslan? You are continually trying to hammer a square peg into a round hole. Is this your "brilliant" thesis - to tie FGM, Islam, and Alsan together in an effort to demonize all three in one fell swoop? "The line about implicit agreement was used in the hope you had a sense of humour so wold continue the discussion about Aslan's role." Try actually being funny for a starter

Red Lion you gave a shit enough to comment. But thanks for proving my point, kid!

Red Lion look, I disagree with Harris on certain points but even I take umbrage at someone like you making him look this bad in comparison by having an immature troll defending him. You're not helping - you're just embarrassing your side.

Red Lion what nonsense? You haven't read it to know if it is nonsense or not.

***** You're waffling. FGM predates Islam and comes from another continent. What that should tell a person is that those cultures which practiced FGM before Islam existed continue to practiced it and used Islam to justify it as those who live in christian countries do with christianity to justify continuing the practice. In other words, FGM is so ingrained in their cultural practices that they will continue doing so regardless of whatever new culture that comes in. You see, people will use anything to justify and rationalize their actions and beliefs but attacking Islam over FGM is as pointless as attacking Christianity over it because the practice did not originate with either. BTW there have been imams who have publicly spoken out against FGM but don't let that fact get in your way. http://www.wluml.org/news/west-africa-mauritanian-muslim-imams-initiate-rare-ban-female-circumcision

***** You keep babbling without really saying anything. Fact - FGM predates Islam Fact - FGM is not and has not been practiced in the area where Islam originated nor in the power bases of Damascus, Baghdad, and Istanbul Fact - FGM started in Central Africa and has since spread due to immigration Looking at these facts then blaming islam or trying to make a connection with Islam to damn it and Aslan over FGM is ridiculous. There are plenty of other points to criticize Islam and Aslan over but FGM is not one of them. Let it go FFS! In fact Politifact rate Aslan's critique of Maher's FGM statement being a Central African issue as valid and mostly true http://www.politifact.com/punditfact/statements/2014/oct/02/reza-aslan/fact-checking-reza-aslans-retort-bill-maher/ but far be it for that to get in the way of your bizarre obsession over one talking point in badly done CNN interview
