Much of the rightwing base has been indoctrinated by decades of rabid rightwing rhetoric and projection to the point they believe any conspiracy no matter how outlandish if it's about liberals being bad. Trump maybe a bad businessman but he's sharp conman and gullible people are a con man's bread and butter. He became a Pied Piper to this group during Obama's presidency and now the GOP is scared of their base because the base is fiercely and insanely supportive of Trump that to criticize Trump would be political suicide at this point.
