  1. The spread of Christianity and Islam greatly inflated the history of Israel making a minor kingdom(s) much grander than it really was. The reality is the Hebrews were often overlooked or what ancient records survive they were often beaten by their neighbors - Egyptians, Moabites, Aramites, Assyrians, and Babylonians. The zealots who claim Israel is 3500 years old really don't know what they're talking about. It barely had the name Israel in the time of the United Monarchy (if that even existed and if it did it was relatively small). The Northern Kingdom of Israel was often referred to as Samaria especially by the Assyrians. The fact that rankles ardent zionists is that the area carried the name Palestine in some form or fashion (Peleset by Ancient Egyptians/Filastin in Arabic) much longer.
