@oldRoyaltypewriter In 2016 the rate in British Columbia was $72 per month for a single, fully employed, resident of the province. My employer paid for my Provincial healthcare monthly off my cheque as well as a "full benefits private health plan (Great West Life Insurance) thru my employer which they picked up the full tab on. I had a heart attack July 1st (Canada Day) 2016, which I mistook for heartburn, then a possible stroke (I thought it might be a flu bug) the following Friday (July 8th), I then waited another week decided to get myself checked out since Vancouver General Hospital was only 5 blocks from my place. The ER checked my vitals and then spent the next 7 days in hospital. First night in a bed in the ER and then transferring to the Intensive Care Ward. Not because I wasn't doing well, simply because it was an available bed. Later that day I was in a private room for the rest of my stay. One stent installed in my heart and removal of a liver stone . Total bill upon leaving: zero, Zilch. nada, none. Was informed by zthe nurse that handled my release that if this had been stateside I would have been out of pocket at least $20,000 dollars. Did I mention the food was very tasty. I have nothing but praise for our Canadian Single-Payer health system. My extended private plan only had to cover me for my prescription drugs (approx. $85 without it and about $30 with the plan.) @DougFLTRX Are you always this rude? You're missing the point. How much were you "out of pocket"? I still had no "out of pocket" expenses. As a resident of BC, once registered, I am automatically covered usually with no "out of pocket" expenses.
