This is human nature since time immemorial, and has been proven time and time again through both countless real world examples and all matter of psychological research. They "understand" the concepts about fair trials etc you are talking about just fine. They just dont care. Might makes right, simple as that. Against that, thinking you can appeal to some "morals" for anything in a majority of the population is setting oneself up for bitter disappointment, to say the least. Act accordingly.
