@rich8037 I dont want to be too down on you, I am sure you misheard/misunderstood your friend (or he was) and not doing it out of being "lazy" as other suggests. But as it stands, you seem to be have a bit misinformed. it is generally accepted that for normal passenger cars, if you want to stretch your oil change intervals, you change the filter one time extra in between oil changes. You certainly dont never Change oil if you are doing any significant milage (more than 40 000km) and plan on keeping the car. Might I ask what car/engine that "lasted longer than generally reckoned to be good for" and what milage that would be? Lastly, I see that you wrote "ridiculous mileage" paired with 500k(+) km. Thats not ridiculous at all if taken as an engine alone, in fact its expected that any modern engine without catastrophic design flaws will do this milage very easily. The fact that most dont, is because lack of proper maintenance as prescriped by the manufacturerby the owner and the car surrounding the engine being too expensive to fix before that milage, leading to the entire thing being scrapped and/or the vehicle being exported. What I am getting at, is you think 500k is much for a functioning engine that gets good service (its not) than perhaps your frame of reference for how oil affects longevity is not fully informed.
