Lots and lots of cars (perhaps even the majorty sold) in europe have 20 000+ mile oil change intervals. Seems to work ok in some regards but it puts pretty high demand on engine construction. I can only assume the oil put in at original factory servicing is on the upper end of quality than any oil tested here, perhaps better . Of course, climate and driving profile got a lot more influence than almost every other factor. Our company cars often do 20 000 mile oil changes, and it doesnt cause any problems for the 300 000 miles we tend to run them. Conclusion: Long oil change intervals can certainly be ok if you got the right engine and good driving conditions, and factory spec oil. The traditional american way of 5000 mile oil changes seems very outdated with modern oil and engines, if you use a reasonable oil.
