If its got 8 "bars" left, the car reckons its lost about 50% of capacity. It doesnt use a linear "battery bar" scale. But you are right about the range being not much to write home about even when new.

Hard to believe that will be an issue in the forseeable future to be honest, the parts of the car are well worth paying for as scrap by various merchants. I would love to be given an EV battery or whole car for free, trust me. Can get lots of use out of the parts and resell them. Battery is most likely to break in modules, and then you can still use the good ones for solar energy storage etc.

@marktaylor1777 Quite a lot I imagine, but for now its more likely broken parts may just become a part of a landfill in many places, sadly.

@fill7t1 I am sorry, I dont get what you mean. Maybe I am a bit slow, can you clarify a bit more? How did he put it, can you give an example? Because from this video and perhaps your post it seems he somewhat erroneously extrapolate the value and capacity of a very early Nissan Leaf to other EVs, when that is very far from the truth.

Yeah but to be honest theres nothing really surprising about this, Leaf values have been low compared to other EVs for close to a decade now, because of their rapidly degrading batteries compared to other EVs, and the first 1-2 years of production was especially terrible, after which they use another battery chemistry thats much better but stll far from good. The Leaf, compared to other EVs of that age, was always built to a price whcih brought lots of compromises compared to other EVs. Teslas for example at least used to have a much better used market value compared to similar ICE cars ( E class, 5 series, A6 ) from the german brands, and by a lot. Things might have changed a lot since I last checked but I just dont see the data to support the conclusion they will depreciate more havily than ICE cars of the same age. On average for all EVs sold, the inverse have been true so far, I am pretty sure. Things might of course change in the future.

@vanmore5124 I doubt it, with how cheap labour is in china. A complete EV battery is almost certainly worth saving if it isnt damaged by water/fire etc.. Has to be a regulatory scam, in that they can get away with dumping it, but not recycling it... thats my take at least. If there arent enough others, Then I will open shop to collect them for free. Maybe we can go into business together, I will give you 10% commission of profits for every car you refer to me.

@ryanwilliams6526 Tons of them are recycling the old complete car battery packs, so not sure where you got "anybody" from. I cant of course talk for all cases, but as per my post above there may be other factors at play. Individual broken cells are another matter, but thats not really what we discussed here since we were talking about failed packs in cars because of age and milage, in which case the majority of cells are likely to still be good and usable for other purposes.

@andrewwatson5360 Yeah, but thats the smart thing: People dont need to be think about it or have the skills; if there you can make enough money out of it, someone else will offer to do it for you. A lot of EV stuff is reusable. Thats why a lot of low value cars are exported where they can drive on in places were people arent as fussy about the age of the car or a illuminated airbag light on the dash... As of right now though, I would say that over 90-95% of current EVs produced can be repurposed. Now, the stuff thats totally borked, yeah that is unfortunately going to have to be "recycled" as cant be repurposed, and that is not a good thing for sure. Myself, I think there is no need for EVs in any european country from a pollution standpoint more or less. Numbers point to pollution being way lower these days compared to before, in spite of more traffic. Modern cars are just that much cleaner than older ones. Another factor is pollution from personally owned vehicles is almost insignificant in a global perspective compared to coal powerplants in outher countries etc. Money would be better spent cleaning up lots of factories in China and India and so on. In what way? If you are talking about degradation, the Leaf is, and always was, an exception for the worse. about 1-1,5% for 10000 miles is reasonable for most other EVs.

@andrewwatson5360 Well I am not doing anything with EVs professionally either, I am just a hobbyist. Not enough EVs, nor people for that matter, were I am at (rural Sweden) to make a business out of it. I am just speaking about what can be done. I have been interested in EVs and the technology behind them since I had a electric RC car as a kid, long ago. Havent owned one yet though, theres not any availible that fit my needs and budget. As for cars I do personally own, I am quite picky compared to most people about what I like when it comes to cars, as well as having many needs that have to be fulfilled by one or two cars. They have to be practical, and fun at the same time. I need a tow hitch capable car for example. I have finally found the cars that fullfill those needs and will never sell them, unless forced to by some new law. I do everything on my vehicles myself these days.. Just arent enough trustworthy people around that takes pride in their work. I was too busy so I left a car at the main dealer to fixing an egine misfire problem as well as a loss of power, at a eye wateringly expensive rate per hour (about 200 quid per hour). They couldnt find the fault with it though, because their computer didnt find any error code.... hilarious. Thats when I swore off it for good, even if I had to use time I really didnt have to fix it myself. I like to drive fast, really fast on both tracks and the unlimited parts of autobahn. Cant risk things not being 100%. Anyway, EVs make sense in some perspectives, such as taxis or delivery vehicles used in heavily populated areas, but still see a lot of mileage. Both from a cost and enviromental perspective, thats when they make start to make sense compared to ICE cars. Cheers.

@squeakers27 I know quite a bit about battery wear in cars and other electrically powered stuff, thats why answered the way I did. EV cars have been around in the mainstream for longer than 10 years now, and yes, Indeed most of them do have the majority of their range left after 10 years. So that is already settled, more or less. Count on about 20% degradation and you will likely be in the rough ballpark. Performance is less dependent on the capacity and will degrade even less, a few percent is likely, so within the margin of error.

@aib0160 It depends heavily on which model of car and how it was used, but its possible it will be reasonably serviceable by then. But that is on the upper edge from what we have seen this far, I would say.

@aib0160 Dont get me wrong I dont generally disagree with anything you wrote in your latest post, I just state the numbers/data as I got it. There is one bit I dont agree with though, and thats the longer/double life expectancy of a diesel vehicle. Mechanically for the drivetrain parts you have a reasonable point, but all current data sadly points to if anything the diesel might be scrapped before the EV because of small MOT fails that are uneconomical to repair (airbag light etc) and legislation (ulez, et al). Sad but true. Cheers mate.

@paulpaintshop103 I know, but thats not relative and in comparison to ICE cars, like in this video and secondly they made an enormous price drop on their new cars, which effects older ones downstream by quite a bit. Are they cheaper than a similar ICE car second hand now, even after the price drop? Not sure about that... If you got any data with eyebrow reasing number I will of course change my mind, but I havent seen it.
