Dont agree they are complicit, you have to build what the customers want or go out of business.... They got no choice. Since customers wont change their mind, the only solution is regulatory.

@martinsvensson6884 Mostly the discussion was about standard/tradtional type car vs SUV/CUV, which as a comparison are unaffected by regulations in Europe.

Why though? Because the cause more damage if they hit something? I would rather we dramatically up the competency of the drivers, that would solve the vast majority of accidents. Perhaps a tiered licence with weight and power, such as with motorcycles, would be in order.

@asphalthedgehog6580 Those 80% could be allowed to drive very light weight cars with a speed limit. Think old 3 wheelers. And a mandated cell phone jammer mounted so there is no use for it while driving. Should get us a fair bit along.

@martinsvensson6884 You might want to read the post again, we were discussing possible future regulations. Noting to stop them from including what I talked about.

I will adress the part of "feel guilty about buying these cars that are so heavily promoted" ....Feel guilty and heavily promoted how? People buy what they want, if anything there are every incentive for normal people to not buy large, heavy cars. Yet they do it. So in my mind, if they purport to care, they should feel guilty because they are hypocrites.

The truth is, "nobody" cares about any solution, thats only lip service. Same as always, and with everything. So SUVS will reign supreme.

This is not really true. You have mixed up most of the factors regarding what you wrote in that post, sadly. For example, the frontal area isnt correlated to a low and pointy nose.Drag figures have been constant for 30+ years. Your saabs consumption is because of other reasons. I recommend reading a bit more about the subject, its both fun and educational to learn more about car propulsion and aerodynamics if you got an interest in vehicles.

"high torque at low revs" = power.... (just a note). Its not the power alone either though, its the better thermal efficency.

@jonhaddock1799 I get what you mean, though I tend to include frictional losses (because of higher revs) into the "effective/practical" thermal efficency category.
