You are right, but I have heard it from a lot of people, not just Americans. Older Swedes passing through are often very scared of it, compared to the slow and almost empty roads we got in Sweden. For me, I thinks its not fast enough these days, with all the traffic and stau but it is what it is. Ironically, even though the speed limit is max 120 km/h in Sweden, and even that is rare, its almost easier to have a higher average speed here, since there is so little traffic and no stau to eat up your time.

As the other guy said, depends heavily on the car.. if anything in many cars the relative tire noise compared to wind noise is lower at higher speeds.

Seems right, I estimated about 220 without doing any calculations, just from the "feel" of the speed, and experience.

From what I have seen of the US, lots of people drive with crappier vehicles and tires (because of no inspections), and they also seem to drop a lot more stuff that can chew up tires, I guess correct freight anchoring isnt a law or isnt policed at all there.

I am pretty sure he topped 220-230 or so during one part. Good enough for most normal cars.

Yeah, thats true. But if there is no faster car behind, its reasonable to stay left. I didnt see being overtaken a single time in this video, so maybe he got it right?

@dukejohn5608 Also in Germany you really must keep to the right as much as possible. So not all that different. But sometimes, common sense says its better to stay left. I wouldnt have stayed left as much as this dude did at the relatively low speeds he did, but when you go for example 270-280 km/h, keeping to the right is just nonsense. No one will pass you in a hurry at that speed, so its much safer by many times over to have a margin to other cars.

The video is cut a lot for sure. Its impossible to do that drive in less than 2 hours currently, in any production car. Even with zero traffic. With the driving in the video, I should think the estimated time would be close enough, perhaps towards 5 hours in total might be possible. I think google maps calculate unlimited speed as 130 km/h (81 mph). Which is the "recommended speed" for germany in those cases. So not anything extreme. There wasnt any extreme speeds shown in the video, looks to me like he drove a bit over 200km/h at most, maybe something like 220 km/h (137 mph)? I guess I could calculate from the markings, but meh...

Absolutely correct. Too much traffic.

You are almost entirely correct, however if you can double your average speed, (in low traffic conditions), you of course half the time. But if you go by day, in the summer months, even I who is always in a hurry, feel no need to go faster than about 130km/h. Just too much traffic these days, as you said.

@dan_kay Depends on what you mean by "excessively".. I have saved many hours by driving a lot faster than general traffic. Otherwise, see my comment above.

@baronvonlimbourgh1716 Yeah I know, but I mostly travel in the direct south-north and vice versa, during summer traffic. Unfortunately, that means about 3-4 hours lost on significant slowdowns and queueing on a typical trip nowadays. But for sure there are still stretches even then to use a bit more speed, but they wont make up even a fraction of what is lost. So it really can be a struggle to average more than 120-130km/h when you are passing through a lot of Germany in north-south direction these days.
