Well, mainstream pop music artists rarely did, pretty much no matter how far you go back in time. Probably you have to go back further then the invention of the gramophone / record or wax roll player itself for the majority of music to have been made by the performer.

Well you can argue that of course, but its what people like. I am sure people with other tastes werent in any way deprived of alternatives. A lot of people like Mcdonalds, and its very popular measured by number of people eating there, but it still doesnt take away any business, exposure or a single customer of your "local" Michelin star rated restaurant....

@ The truth is most people dont care about music you would want them to, and they never did. Mcdonalds outcompeted many other similar establishments, and this kind of music is just more popular than the indie stuff, and always has been. Its in the name after all "pop". Anyway, long ago the general person cared more about the lifestyle and subculture of different music, but when that fell out of favor it showed how little people really cared for a "diverse diet". Max Martin etc was a man whos time had come, by virtue if supplying people with what they wanted. Personally, I dont really care about people eating nuggets ever day nor listening to mass produced pop music either, More power to them if it makes them happy.

@ Yes of course, but its mainstream pop music this video is about after all, and that also what you talked about in your post, especially the last sentence. So thats what I found relevant to talk about as a reply.
