  2.  @AltCutTV  Well that might well be "the actual answer" in some of the cases.. But I dont think its all that common. Anyway, its not even close to all cases, and quite possibly the minority. In Sweden for example, we were taught US had 52 states, because they included for example Puerto Rico in that.

  5.  @Miccielly  Exactly right, we were taught they just didnt change the flag after including the other ones, which seemed to make more sense than changing it. Considering most famous flags of countries were I am from are unchanged for hundred of years, changing it more often than, or even at all, seemed ludicrous.

  11.  @ingvartorma9789  How do you know whats correct and incorrect? Reading it in a book doesnt make it correct,, nor hearing it on the news. There are so many ways information can be willingly or unwillingly transformed in every step of the communication it doesnt even bear mentioning. In any case, even if your last sentence was tongue in cheek, using such totally subjective terms as "lazy" and "accomplished the least" whilst seemingly serious ruins the credibility of everything else. Or do you believe such things can be measured in any meaningful and objective way? You post heavily overestimate what knowledge people have, how deep it goes, and how meaningful it is. As, sadly, evidenced by your last sentence. I am sure you mean well, but you have placed way too much credit in every step of the way regarding what you describe.

The state question is interesting, but there is at least one possible answer for some getting it wrong: Some countries take a more "broad" approach to what constitutes a "state", including some "territories" as well. In Sweden for example, they at least used to teach (in fourth to fifth grade) the answer being 52, which did as you suspected include for example Puerto RIco. Funnily enough, we were also taught the flag indeed has 50 stars, one for each state, but they just hadnt updated it to include the newer ones. Which seemed more plausible to us than updating it for every new state inclusion seemed ridiculous to us, since our flag and the one of neighbouring countries hasnt been changed/updated for hundreds of years. So updating it more often than so seems unthinkable.

  13.  @AltCutTV  I have seen that speculation many times before, and by different people. Also, it being beacuse of the numbers of weeks in a year. Considering that, it seems a lot like finding things that correspond to the number "52" and trying to reaason backwards from it. I dont buy it, at least for Swedish circumstances. My explanation of whats most likely "at least for Swedes", is, as far as I know, the only one that can be verified by records as being true, and being reasonably general. It was indeed taught in various schools across Sweden for a period of time. So at least if you ask a Swede and they give this answer, there really wouldnt be any need to remember the specifics of what makes a state or nor, just the number taught to them: 52.

  18. You sure have some high demands or expectations for what an "educated citizen" is, if you include sacramento being in it. I would wager quite a bit less than 1% of europeans knowing that. For college or university educated ones, perhaps 10%.
