  1. Well it all boils down to protectionism and marketing... The "chicken tax" more lax emissions/CAFE standards and similar being the former, and the "weird belief" that car cannot haul being the latter. the latter is not weird, in as much as with good marketing, you can make people believe literally anything. Just another one of those successful campaigns.

  2. Trucks will "never" be popular in europe, but SUVs (really CUVs) are very popular. For much the same reasons like the US, a huge chunk of the buying public love what they can offer. Socially, the family man that exclusively made the decision to buy a car just for practicality (hence, station wagon) is an endangered species as a car buyer, not just in the US but in europe as well.
