Depends on what you compare to, really. For many cases, they are quite good actually. Also, most racing classes have a lot of regulations, making the theoretical "free for all" advantage of a petrol irrelevant.

@jdktoo Think about it: Have you ever heard of a totally unregulated racing series? I certainly struggle to think of a single one, and I would say I know of quite a lot.... In those regulations, there is as good as always a list of a single or a few permitted fuels you are allowed to run. Meaning you very often HAVE to run the vehicle on petrol, you got no other choice. This is very common. And the point is that if you got a class where both petrol and diesel are welcome for example, it may well be that the diesel is faster, depending on what other regulations the class run. A good example would be classes with pretty low rev limits or classes with fuel efficiency formula, like the Old Group C for example. Hopefully this post gets the point across a bit better?

@jdktoo Well there have been unregulated motorsport classes but thats both rare and long ago. But for this purpose, lets assume they all are. Which is why diesels can potentially have the advantage, depending on those regulations. Not very complicated, really.

@jdktoo What about group B? That is one of the motorsports, of which there are many, that had regulations that didnt lend it to using diesels. I am pointing out there are others, where this isnt the case.

No traction control on a 2003? Is it a work van? Thats got to be very uncommon for a normal passenger car by that year, are you sure you dont mix it up with (the more extensive) stability control?

@davidpreston9909 Fair enough, that explains it. My car is also diesel powered, by a 3 liter engine with about 350hp. Grips pretty well but on bumpy roads the traction control can get a bit of a workout. I am trying to make it it into a combined long distance cruiser/towing car/daily driver/ track car... not the easiest combination to pull off... cheers mate.

Not necessarily true, many racing classes including top classes at lemans such as the group C era was fuel consumption based regulation formulas. A diesel could then theoretically do just as wel, if not better with the samma capacity as a petrol engine. There really is nothing specific that says a diesel has to have less power for a certain capacity than a petrol engine, especially if fuel and air restrictions regulations come into play, as they most often do.

"channel"? You do realise its got nothing to do with any specific channel?
