Button molds and construction is expensive as heck. Thats why so many cars share them to this day. In the 1980s, ugly black plastic is just what they used for buttons in every car. Audi was one of the first brands to use decent feeling plastic buttons back in the late 1980s.

@testcardsandmore1231 That was just what was availible at the time. There really wasnt anything better to stick there. Sourcing different plastics and make new buttons, would have been expensive like you wouldnt believe. If a small volume manufacturer would have taken it upon themselves, it could easily have increased the price of each car with thousands of dollars. Just about nobody at the time would have payed that. I agree it looks very stupid and I found the quality of plastics of every car laughable until Audi lauched their late 1980s cars. But the simple fact is most people dont care, caring about such things (or saying you do) is a modern "fad" for the general population. So they wouldnt have benefitted by selling more cars. Since this subject is so broad, I can write an thesis or two about all this malarkey, but this this will have to do for now, unless you have any specific questions. Cheers.
