I seriously doubt it makes a difference, or they would offer it for the normal cars they sell many times more of. Wouldnt make sense to keep a non performance sales argument from the other models. Maybe on the e36 which was the first car to have it, it had some effect. No, I am pretty sure its just another styling choice to differentiate it from lower models, they have put tons of those on the M cars over the years.

@chinadashauthority65 Eh... were to start with this one. Read the comment I replied to again, and look up what buffeting means. Then you can get back to me. I am sure you will find that occams razor and general logic, strongly favor my explanation.

The Moth I dont know. Its an educated guess. I just know that it has been an exclusive M design feature since the E36 M3 debuted more than 25 years ago. Surely a top spec 7 series could get 10 cents worth of plastics extra tacked on the mirror if it made a discernable difference in comfort? I find it more likely that its there to look cooler than the base model, just as the M exclusive rounded housing interior rear view mirror they had in the e39 and e46 days.

@tobiasnaylor Not sure about that one, since the toyota uses standard BMW mirrors it is easy to fit M model mirrors to it. People have tried them and reported no difference, though I am sure there are also those who have reported one. I Still think its to much of a coincidence that every M3 since 1993 uses them, but no non M model, including cars that had much buffeting problems, such as my old 540i which was more expensive than an M3. Seems a bit strange, wouldnt you say? Oh, and its called buffeting, not buffering but I understood what you meant so no sweat. Just a heads up.
