  1. We need to fly slower to save energy. Also, using power just to stay in the air seems wasteful, we should find a better way. Hmmm.... Thats right... airships will come back, oh yeah baby. Make the outside a lifting body while your at it.

  3.  @carltheshivan  As far as I know, there are not just research, but detailed plans for prototypes from the early 60s, and probably concepts from much earlier than that. So, yeah its been around for a long time, but not too much in fiction, perhaps the Gundam series mentioned can even be the first depiction of it in thar regard.
