Brutal. But true.

@observationsfromthebunker9639 and number 4 - the German HSF never set out to challenge the RN again in the vital area of the North Sea in this war, and the blockade of Germany played a large part in its collapse in 1918. This was the British war aim achieved, the battle was decisive. No, there was a lack of effective pursuit, but - did it matter?

Quite so. Just as air superiority is there to support and deliver the ground victory.

@lwilton funnily enough I was going to suggest that both the Battle of the Atlantic and the USN submarine campaign against Japan were the battles that were very important in winning a war, but I don't think they fit Mahan's 'decisive battle' criteria; they do however fit the rest of his thinking, in that the Allies retained enough control of the Atlantic to meet their war aims, while in the Pacific, the Japanese did not. I can also agree that things had moved beyond one decisive battle in both the north Atlantic and the Pacific, in that it took a number of battles to write down German or Japanese forces. To be fair to Mahan, he was thinking and writing in the days before air power and submarines became effective. I wonder what he would have thought if writing in 1946? Just a wee thought anyway.
