  1. Spot on; also I note your comment about NATO planning to use autobahnen as airstrips... I believe that during WWII, the Germans had actually already done this.

  2. I'd heard a variation on this that it was built wide and straight to assist with the transport of Lancasters from the Greengate Chadderton factory to Woodford for final assembly. There is a video of the 80th anniversary celebration where most of a Lanc fuselage is on a low loader going from Chad to Woodford, but having tried to watch it a few times, I am not if it does go along Viccy Avenue, and of course, it may not have taken the 'oroginal' route if such a thing existed.
