Agreed; a lot of more modern 'surplus' in museums from the gunpowder era onwards always seems very small, possibly because it was never issued.

The modern era of being sorry for everything: I love weapons and their use but need to apologise for showing what they actually do to a head made of jelly.

@ragnkja great answer - add hops to ale and you get beer! Which is why Jason mentions ale, not beer, here. If you trust Wikipedia, hopped ale or beer only started appearing in the late mediaeval period, and took some time to grow in common useage in England. Hopping ale uses the antibacterial qualities in hops that makes it last longer, hence less frequent large scale brewing became practical. I think. Possibly.

@matiasvarpanen9203 it was made from barley malt most of the time as it's a clever way of getting sugars out of the grain. However the product might not look like modern clear ale/beer; the Anglo-Saxons sometimes called ale "liquid bread", so there might be a degree of cloudiness in it.

The most common one is calling it medieval ;-)

Terrific! Not much of a mystery really, but nothing wrong with that!
