And what was your point? The Ross rifle was trialled by Ross with his own British unit in the in the Boer War - I am not sure why you think you should be seeing pictures of it in the hands of Canadians at this point, as by the time it was accepted for Canadian military service, the Boer War was over. The video's point is that if you do manage to reassemble the bolt incorrectly (which was made impossible by the rivet mentioned) then the bolt could hit you in the face, but tales of them flying loose etc ...... What isn't so mythical are the issues of jamming in action. As for the rest --- yes it proved totally unsuitable as a service rifle when used in trench warfare, was quite rightly replaced by the SMLE eventually when there were enough to be issued, but the use of it by snipers who would and could have time to give the weapon the TLC it needed are not myth, in the same way that the P14 was utilised. The SMLE lived on and rightly so as a good main battle rifle. Best forgotten - definitely not as there are still shooters out there who love their piece of Canadian history, and secondly, a good example of how sometimes cutting edge technology isn't always what a soldier needs.

gump my 'expert book type knowledge' is that the Canadians were not permitted to manufacture the SMLE under license so had to look for a home grown alternative. The SMLE is much easier to look after - the bolt can be removed in one easy operation with no tools required - but I'd hesitate to call any rifle favoured by snipers for long range shooting 'junk' or suggest they should not be fired... An interesting video in many ways - my main interest was whether the bolt could be operated without moving he head out of the aim and it seems not. It also suggests that tales of bolts flying out of the action may be somewhat exaggerated.... Am I also right to think it's a 5 round magazine so any bonus in rate of fire is lost in any case, when compared to the SMLE which holds 10 and doesn't need you to break the sight picture when operating the bolt.

pancholom But I'd not like to call the infantry man unqualified --- Empire troops were very well trained in the use and care of their own weapons. Ok - misassembly when tired or stressed can happen, but having started to read up on this in response to another thread, the actual cases of injury caused by a bolt seem to be rare and of minor significance. The basic point of the video is that if the rifle is assembled correctly then you have nothing to fear, and that as soon as there were cases of the reversed carrier, a modification was ordered to prevent it.

Used by the machine gun detachment of the 3rd Seaforth Highlanders, Ross' own unit, in the Boer War. Read "the Ross Rifle Story". I think when we get to the point of seeing you copy and paste your view a few times then we know what your next response will be if we carry on trying to talk with you. If you wish to believe Canadians were sold short by naughty British imperialists - carry on!

gump and your reference is.... missing, but at least you're pretty clear about your anti British bias now. Junk then, junk now, and you're best forgotten.

s.a.s elite not sure - I think the Ross only ever held 5 rounds, and the P14s and the M1917s brought out in 1940 when we were expecting invasion were also 5 shot magazines. SMLEs - always 10, but not sure if there were any 8 shot bolt actions out there... Anyone else?

Yes us people are dreadful aren't we. Glad you have outed your hatred and bias Ted, it helps other readers understand why you fabricate and misunderstand in line with your own agenda. Meanwhile - the rest of us can try and understand history with a more open mind. Ciao!

Fred - you can't help anyone who suffers from nationalism/racism etc as anyone who denies him his right to rant is "one of them". He's got as good a grasp of history and research as the next lunatic. Let his unreasoned comments stand - I bet the only reason he hasn't abused pancholom as being a Fiendish Brit is that pancholom is clearly Italian speaking so can't easily be tarred as part of the Evil Empire!

We're safe guys - he thinks I am English and that you're called Mark. I love the man - he is the 21st century's answer to Oscar Wilde.
