Well said Ian and commenters too. There was a time when historians could be peeved by genuine errors or deliberate disinformation from other humans, and try to address it. Raising awareness of this as a growing issue is a good thing to do. But is AI the issue, or is the real problem the people who create and circulate this stuff, knowing it's fake, not caring if it's fake, or not being able to spot it's fake? Faked images have been out there almost since the invention of photography; am I right to think that an AI generated image isn't a computer somewhere getting bored and acting autonomously, but is initiated by human agency? Anyway a fascinating story, I will seek out a book that tells me more about her. EDIT - Marooned in the Arctic bought for me e-reader. I needed a new book, thank you Ian.
