Thanks Jake - I'll see if I can get that title as an e-book. I'd recommend Gary Sheffield's biography of Haig; it does a lot to put several myths to bed. Interestingly you both misquote Haig, and the actual correct quote is invariably given out of context to further the ends of making Haig seem a dinosaur. http://quoteinvestigator.com/2012/11/30/horse-in-war/ The fun of history from the sources - it's always good to check the original sources as anyone with an agenda can write a book nowadays.

Well let's not stray off topic - I think we can agree that this is about guns and also an interesting discussion about not relying on poorly informed and poorly researched "sources".

Jake - if you can reference it that would be great because where you read it and who wrote what you read do make a big difference; eg the old worry of fact vs opinion - I do like to know where these things come from. It's not as if you're against Pershing as I thought you wouldn't be, but in the UK there is a lot of bad history about generals such as Haig, where poor history is quoted as fact, so I am a bit picky about accepting wikihistory if that makes sense? I can only compare to the article on the Owen gun from this site which is good - then look at the comments on it which would suggest Owen had a fully functional SMG ready in 1939 and the 'stupid' government made his life hell. The truth is very different. So - no offence to yourself, I just like to know where these things come from.

Just a thought but what's the provenance of Jake's mention of General Pershing? It sounds rather unlikely hence my question of "did he really?" NB Paul; as you started this conversation with a bit of a silly post, thanks for at least reading the several responses challenging what you said!
