  1.  @MystificationSwarp  one of the most forgotten facts on WWII was that my country (UK) went to war with Germany because it invaded Poland, but did nothing when the USSR did the same 13 days later- in fact did quite the opposite, right through to Yalta and beyond. As for 1920, and 1980... I think someone has already suggested that "became part of" would be more neutral, and a lot more tactful.
