The NBER looks at both depth and diffusion, the downturn was not deep and it was not widespread, the unemployment rate was near all time lows. The NBER does make a call after the fact, but the best real time recession indicator we have is the Sahm rule, and that was not triggered at any point in 2022. But even if it were a recession back then, which it wasn't, that would still mean it was incredibly brief, because that year finished with over 2% growth, and we've been growing ever since.
