I'm getting ready to start a new brick and mortar and expect 100 hour weeks, every week for the first 2 years. You conflate, wanting to work with being forced to work, nobody in America is forced to work. Look at San Francisco, you have the full range of not wanting to work, to billionaire.

  3.  @daryl4841  You've obviously never been retired. You'll GLADLY welcome MORE than 40 hours of work, if you spend just 1 year retired. Now, what you call work, and what I call work are two different things. For me, work = hours spent doing things that generate income. Not "doing things that suck". And I monetize my hobbies. So, unless you are going to catch up on 40 years viewing time of TV, and unless you enjoy staring at flowers grow or paint peel... you will seek a hobby to monetize too, and thus, will spend more than 40 hours a week, WORKING. Heck, I think I spent 40 hours on EACH of my hobbies this week.

And packing up a family and household and moving location at the cost of thousands, isn't always possible for people with degrees that worked at certain positions that have been let go because their industry was scaled back. I'm not talking about a construction crew member or teen needing a first job. Those are plenty.
