When did Northern states get rid of slavery?
1804
The Declaration of Independence not only declared the colonies free of Britain, but it also helped to inspire Vermont to abolish slavery in its 1777 state constitution. By 1804, all Northern states had voted to abolish the institution of slavery within their borders.
THAT'S WHY STATES WERE DEFINED AS EITHER "FREE STATES" OR "SLAVE STATES" You'll be better served to read state constitutions. Search Engines really have you confused.
The Emancipation Proclamation was a War Strategy by Lincoln that positively impacted the NORTH. Slaves from the SOUTH then became CONTRABAND as they escaped and were refugees, instead of FUGITIVES.
When Did Slavery End for the North? On September 22, 1862, Lincoln issued a preliminary emancipation proclamation, and on January 1, 1863, he made it official that “slaves within any State, or designated part of a State… IN REBELLION,…shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free.”

The civil war was fought over slavery @davidwitherington7689 and was brewing sense the end of the Revolutionary War...
11 free north and 11 slave south
Worked for a while, but what about new states? Should they be free or slave. The south felt threatened if more were free. The north was angry about the mandate of the Fugitive Slave Act.
WHY DON'T YOU MENTION THE COMPROMISES AND THE FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT?
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a law that tried to address growing sectional tensions over the issue of SLAVERY. By passing the law, which President James Monroe signed, the U.S. Congress admitted Missouri to the Union as a state that allowed SLAVERY, and Maine as a FREE state.
As part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. Furthermore, California entered the Union as a FREE state and a territorial government was created in Utah.
Of all the bills that made up the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was the most controversial. It REQUIRED CITIZENS to assist in the recovery of fugitive slaves. It denied a fugitive's right to a jury trial.
THE SOUTH ATTACKED THE UNION FORT
68 federal troops stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, withdrew to Fort Sumter, an island in Charleston Harbor. The North considered the fort to be the property of the United States government. The people of South Carolina believed it belonged to the new Confederacy.
