And from that perspective you always grab more territory if you can get it, so he assumed NATO was trying to trick him by feigning disinterest in Ukrainian membership.

What you do not understand is that if the Russians lose a million men and all their Soviet-era stock fighting this """EU proxy army""", that's a huge win for the EU, who are left unscathed while Russia has expended enormous resources. We're spending like 2-3% of GDP on this war, while Russia can only keep up by going into full war economy mode and burning its economy.
